Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to overhaul his Manchester United squad this summer after finishing sixth in the Premier League
Manchester United ended their Premier League campaign with a whimper as they were beaten at home by Cardiff on the final day of the season.
Two goals from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing ensured that the relegated Bluebirds ended their time in the top tier with three points at Old Trafford.
United had already been guaranteed to miss out on a place in next season’s Champions League but Sunday’s result ensured that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men ended the Premier League season in sixth place, 32 points behind champions Manchester City .
For the Red Devils, defeat to Cardiff was the latest in a string of poor results which has seen Solskjaer’s team record just two wins from their last 12 matches in all competitions.
It came a week after the 20-time English champions were held by another relegated team in Huddersfield and followed comprehensive defeats to Everton , Man City and Barcelona during April.
Following widespread criticism of the team’s performances and growing questions over the attitude of some of the players, the United boss is expected to oversee an overhaul of his squad in the coming months as he aims to re-establish the Red Devils as title contenders.
Several high-profile names are expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, with long-term players Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia among those already confirmed to be heading for the exit and Juan Mata also set to follow when his contract expires.
First-team stars David de Gea, Paul Pogba Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial have also been linked with moves away from Manchester with midfielder Pogba believed to be attracting the interest of Real Madrid .
With growing questions over the status of his players, Solskjaer is expected to receive significant backing from Ed Woodward in the transfer window with a £15m move for Swansea’s Daniel James already thought to be edging closer .
Making improvements to the Red Devils’ defence is believed to be high on the Norwegian’s agenda with Crystal Palace’s 21-year-old right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka identified as an ideal replacement for the ageing Ashley Young.
Although Chis Smalling and Phil Jones have recently signed new deals at the club, United have also been linked with moves for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.
Solskjaer is also thought to be interested in bringing West Ham midfielder Declan Rice to Old Trafford, believing the 20-year-old to be an improvement on Nemanja Matic and the ideal man to partner Scott McTominay in the middle of the park.
The United boss could also look to add even more creativity to his midfield with moves for Sporting Lisbon playmaker Bruno Fernandes and Benfica teenager Joao Felix.
Reports have also suggested that United are prepared to splash-out on Borussia Dortmund’s £100 million-rated English wonderkid Jadon Sancho, despite the German side’s claims that they have no intention of selling the forward.
Predicted line-up in 2019/20 (4-2-3-1)
